Dartmouth girl to sing at 'Moving Wall' ceremony

Amy de Silva, shown last June at the Middleboro Moving Wall event with a
New Bedford veteran named Dennis,
will sing in Plymouth Sunday.

Amy de Silva will be singing "American Tears" at the Plymouth Vietnam Moving Wall closing ceremony at 5 p.m. Sunday.

Amy has been studying voice at The Burt Wood School of Performing Arts in Middleboro for several years. She has sung at many venues, including Fenway Park, the Massachusetts State House, the Middleboro Moving Wall, and at numerous benefits in New York and Pennsylvania for CMT Awareness.

Shortly after Amy sang at the Middleboro Moving Wall last June, a veteran named Dennis removed his Purple Heart from around his neck and placed it on Amy's neck.

Amy is 13 years old and lives in Dartmouth with her parents Bill and Catherine and her brother William.

"The Moving Wall" will be on the Plymouth Waterfront through Monday. A candlelight vigil will be held between 8 and 8:30 p.m. Saturday. The closing ceremony will be held at 5 p.m. Sunday. The Wall will be at Plymouth Memorial State Park on Water Street along Plymouth Harbor. The park is to the right of the Plymouth Rock Monument.

Lorna, Melissa, Valerie and Amy at the
Plymouth Moving Wall, June 7th, 2009

"The Moving Wall" is the half-size replica of the Washington, D.C., Vietnam Veterans Memorial and has been touring the country for more than 20 years.

When John Devitt attended the 1982 dedication in Washington, he felt the positive power of "The Wall." He vowed to share that experience with those who did not have the opportunity to go to Washington.

John, Norris Shears, Gerry Haver, and other Vietnam veteran volunteers built The Moving Wall. It went on display for the first time in Tyler, Texas in October 1984. Two structures of The Moving Wall now travel the nation from April through November, spending about a week at each site.

Raynham Students Find True Meaning of Christmas

Earlier this fall Raynham Middle School student Molly Caron read a newspaper article that made a huge impact on her. The story was about five year old girl named Morgan Lawler and her struggle with a rare and often fatal disease called Fibrodysplasia Ossificans Progressiva. Simply stated, FOP causes muscles and other connective tissue to turn into bone, eventually causing immobility as FOP bone fuses joints. Molly later discovered that she had something in common with Morgan. They both study at The Burt Wood School of Performing Arts in Middleboro and both love to sing.
